Cryptology is the study of cryptography, which is the art of writing or solving codes, and has been prevalent throughout history and dates back as far as human creation.
EXAMPLES IN HISTORY
The idea of writing in secret code can be tracked back all the way to 1900 B.C. with the Egyptians using hieroglyphics to write secret stories or writings. It evolved over many years with different variations throughout different civilizations.
For example, the Mesopotamians used an “atbash” method to encrypt their messages. Atbash was when they would get the normal alphanumeric alphabet and they would correlate it with a backwards alphabet, and they would switch out the letter with its opposite (more on "Atbash" on the "TECHNIQUES AND METHODS" page).
Another ancient example was The Spartans would carry around staffs in order to do their “staff cypher” method. This was when they would carry around a long strip of cloth with letters on it and when wrapped around their stick, it will say a message, but it would only fit their specially molded staff.
